That photo of you on flat iron is pretty sweet. What do they call that obstacle? How hard is it to go up?

Were you referring to the infamous Red X obstacle?

I guess if that's what they call it? It looks like fun! Going down it, it looks like low gears would be a big help, or else your just going to have to control the skid as best you can.

Were you referring to the infamous Red X obstacle? Are the pics not showing up for you? I guess if that's what they call it? It looks like fun! Going down it, it looks like low gears would be a big help, or else your just going to have to control the skid as best you can. That obstacle is called Tilt-a-Whirl. It's fun I've never been up it, but I bet it be a tricky bugger. One the days during Safari they run Flat Iron backwards (south to north), so you go up Easter Egg Hill and Tilt-a-Whirl.

Seems like your running some fairly hard trails over the Safari for 33's and an open front diff. I did 3-d with the Safari in'02 and because our tail gunner had no front drive shaft we ran the trail backwards. MUCH TO EASY they need to rerate it a -2 if they are going to do that, and let those who are expecting a 3 know that it's going to be much easier. I expected a level 3 and was excited to climb UP the mean hill and stuff and ended up going down them. What a disappointment!

Seems like your running some fairly hard trails over the Safari for 33's and an open front diff. Shoot, mine only has 32s and I'm open front AND rear, and I've been able to run Moab Rim, Golden Spike, Flat Iron, Steelbender, Metal Masher, and several others. Moabchic has the same, and she's done all those too! ;D

I have 29's and ran Golden Spike. So I know that running difficult trails is totally doable with small tires. And it seems as though alot of the trails in Moab have 2 ratings for the same trail. Take Hells Revenge for instance, everybody gets all puffed up saying "yup, I ran hells revenge and it's a 4". I'm sorry but HR is little more than a paved road. And if you bypass the escalator, and tip over challenge, and take the way out that bypasses some of the other rough sections it is quite boring. Yet a person can still claim they ran a level 4 trail.
Now I'm not saying you take the bypasses, but a trail should only be rated as hard as the bypasses. Because if you are not "off trail" and on a bypass, then that's the rating the trail should get.
I'm not trying to be harsh sounding.

But the others were there. Go figure. I finally did the whole 'properties' thing and got it to show up. We've had people playing on Tilt-a-Whirl going up and down. It's pretty fun. Don't quote me, but John (our son-in-law who drives the beat up Toyota pickup) may have even backed up the silly thing. He does things like that.

I'm not trying to be harsh sounding. I regestered with the idea of having my CJ back, but unfortunatly that's out of my hands and is looking less and less likely. I see your point on trail ratings, but it is a hard thing to call. A lot of times whether a trail is wet vs. dry can change it's rating significantly. With your arguing, can someone claim to have done The Spike if you by-pass Double Whammy, or Pritchett is you by-pass The Rock Pile: both trails I've done, but both obstacles I've by-passed. I think Hells is rated a 4 mainly cause it is a little more scary, mainly from steepness and if you go off the trail bad things can happen quicky. Also, technically Escalator is an optional obstacle; but I do encourage people to atleast try an obstacle before taking the go around, or take a real good look at then decide. And to XJchic's credit she will always try the hard line before she goes around it; she's stubborn that way! Usually she makes it too!!
